Jumilla Wine

The Jumilla DO was created in 1966. It is right between the provinces of Murcia and Albacete, and it comprises 1 and 6 municipalities respectively. The vineyards stretch over more than 30,000 hectares in a predominantly brown soil with limestone, ideal for the native grape, Monastrell. The continental climate in the regin has low rainfall and temperatures that differ between winter and summer (which is dry), from 0 to 40 degrees.

The Jumilla denomination of origin underwent a devastating phylloxera infestation in the late ‘80s, which forced growers to plant new vines. Because of this, they focused on native varieties such as Monastrell, which now is 80% of the grapes cultivated. Now, due to new winemaking techniques, they produce white, red and rosé wines. They are elegant wines widely sought after abroad.

The Jumilla denomination grows Monastrell, to which they add grenache, cenciel, cabernet sauvignon, syrah and garnacha tintorera. In white grapes, Airén is the most widely-cultivated grape, but there is also Malvasia, Macabeo and Pedro Ximénez.
